Choosing a POS for Your Restaurant or Café

Table service, quick counters and tight food margins ask more of a POS. Here is what matters for hospitality — from order speed to stock and waste.

Choosing a POS for Your Restaurant or Café

Hospitality is not retail with food. Orders change mid-service, margins are thin, and the rush comes all at once. A POS that suits a boutique can buckle behind a busy counter. Here is what to look for if you run a café, restaurant or bar.

Speed under pressure

At peak, seconds matter. The counter should be fast and forgiving: quick item search, easy modifiers ("no onions," "extra shot"), and a layout your staff can learn in a shift. Test it during your busiest hour, not in a quiet demo.

Orders that can change

Diners add a drink, split a bill, or change their mind. Your POS should handle holds, modifiers, partial and split payments without a fight.

Stock and waste

Food is perishable, so stock control is really cost control. Look for a system that deducts ingredients as items sell, flags what is running low, and lets you record waste — so you can see where the money is going before service eats your margin.

Staff accountability

With cash and a fast counter, clear logins matter. Each person should sign in, and you should be able to see sales, voids, comps and discounts by staff member.

It has to keep working

A frozen till during a dinner rush is a disaster. Insist on genuine offline mode so a network drop never stops the line.

The numbers, after service

When you cash up, you want answers: what sold, what made money, which hours were busiest. Daily summaries and best-seller reports turn a long shift into a clear picture — ideally on your phone, so you do not have to be on-site to know how the night went.
